THE DREAM INVESTMENT IN WOMEN OF NOLLYWOOD

March 8th is acknowledged all over the world as International Women’s Day. As the world comes together to celebrate International Women’s Day, it is essential to shine a spotlight on the remarkable women of Nollywood. These women have not only graced our screens with their talent but have also been pioneers of change, breaking barriers, and inspiring generations with their dedication, struggles and achievements.

Recently, Nollywood, has seen a meteoric rise in the prominence of women both in front of and behind the camera. From iconic actresses like Genevieve Nnaji, Ini Edo, Funke Akindele, Mercy Johnson and Omotola Jalade Ekeinde to talented directors like Kemi Adetiba and Mildred Okwo, Nollywood women have been at the forefront of shaping the industry.

Before these women, there were other women like Patience Ozokwor,  Ngozi Ezeonu, Joke Silva, Liz Benson and Eucharia Anonubi had paved the way for todays stars.

The amount of work these women put in Nollywood, on the days of lean Budgets and poor low quality equipments (when compared to todays) is immeasurable.

One of the most significant contributions of Nollywood women is their portrayal of strong, independent female characters on screen. These characters defy stereotypes, challenge societal norms, and empower women to dream beyond limitations. Through their performances, Nollywood actresses have become role models for young girls across Africa and beyond.

Beyond their on-screen roles, many Nollywood women have used their platform to advocate for important social causes. From advocating for gender equality to speaking out against domestic violence, these women have been vocal champions for change in Nigerian society. Their activism has not only raised awareness but has also inspired action and progress.

Nollywood women are not just icons for today, they are paving the way for future generations of female filmmakers, actors, and storytellers. Through mentorship programs, masterclasses, workshops, and initiatives to support aspiring talent, these women are actively working to create a more inclusive and diverse industry where every voice is heard and celebrated.

Although International Women’s Day is a day to celebrate women’s achievements in Nollywood, it is also a reminder of the work that still needs to be done. As we honor the incredible contributions of Nollywood women, we must also commit to creating a more inclusive and equitable industry where every woman has the opportunity to thrive and succeed.

Conclusively, the women of Nollywood can be regarded as icons and titans in their fields. Their resilience in their craft and advocacy has been impactful, and has helped changed the narratives of how we view women in Nigeria.

Happy International Women’s Day.
