MOREMI: REDEFINING NIGERIAN ANIMATION AND COLLABORATIVE STORYTELLING IN KIZAZI MOTO ANTHOLOGY

Picture this: December 6, 2023, the Filmhouse Landmark Cinemas in Lagos was buzzing with excitement as the big screen lit up with Moremi, the latest gem from the Kizazi Moto series. It wasn’t just a screening; it was an immersive journey into the heart of Nigerian storytelling, crafted by the powerhouse collaboration of Tigerfish Studios and Luncan Studios, breathing life into this animated marvel.

What made Moremi stand out was how it merged old and new, blending traditional narratives with cutting-edge 2D and 3D animation. It was like witnessing Nigerian tales take flight into a whole new dimension, captivating not just local audiences but resonating globally.

But the magic didn’t end there. The post-screening Q&A, led by Adebimpe Adebambo, brought together the brilliant minds behind the creation. Shofela Coker, the creator and director, alongside other African animators and enthusiasts, shared insights that added layers to the already fascinating narrative.

Moremi, based on the folktale of a Yoruba queen, who risked her life to save her tribe, spun a gripping story about Luo (voiced by Toluwanimi Olaoye), a spirit boy, and Moremi (voiced by Kemi Bankole), a fearless scientist from future Nigeria. And their race against eerie pursuers revealing forgotten truths, unveiling a sacrifice that echoes from the past.

This animated masterpiece didn’t just tell a story; it wove Nigeria’s rich heritage into a tapestry of diverse African tales, transcending borders. And guess what? Its reach expanded further with Disney+ distribution, giving it a global reach.

This collaboration wasn’t just about creating a short film; it was about elevating emerging talents and shining a spotlight on Nigeria’s animation industry. This marks a pivotal moment in the industry’s growth and promises a future sparkling with innovation and creativity!
