NETFLIX UNVEILS TRAILER FOR KUNLE AFOLAYAN’S “ANIKULAPO: RISE OF THE SPECTRE,” SET TO PREMIERE ON MARCH 1, 2024

Netflix has recently released the much-anticipated trailer for “Anikulapo: Rise of the Spectre,” a gripping Yoruba-language series directed by the acclaimed filmmaker Kunle Afolayan. This four-part series serves as a sequel to the highly successful 2022 film “Anikulapo” and is poised to continue the narrative with even more intensity.

The official trailer, unveiled on Kunle Afolayan’s Instagram account on Tuesday, January 30, 2024, provides a tantalizing glimpse into the intricate storyline that awaits viewers. The series, scheduled to commence streaming on March 1, promises a riveting blend of betrayal, revenge, and power struggles. The one-minute clip hints at the fate of the lead character, Saro, whose presumed demise sets the stage for a new narrative.

Kunle Afolayan, in a 2022 interview with The Guardian UK, expressed his ambitious vision for “Anikulapo,” boldly stating that the series would surpass the global phenomenon, HBO’s “Game of Thrones.” The movie adaptation of the series garnered significant acclaim, receiving 16 nominations at the 2023 Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) and clinching five prestigious awards, including Best Overall Movie, Best Movie in Africa, Best Writer, and Best Soundtrack. It also secured the number one spot on Netflix with an impressive 8,730,000 views in less than two weeks.

Afolayan, during a visit to Channels TV, emphasized the significance of “Anikulapo: Rise of the Spectre” in expanding the rich universe of “Anikulapo.” The storyline, set in Oyo, revolves around Saro, a traditional textile weaver, and his love affair with Queen Arolake, paving the way for a mystical turn of events. “Anikulapo: Rise of the Spectre” completed principal photography in July 2023, building anticipation for its upcoming premiere.

The additional details surrounding the series reveal an impressive ensemble cast, featuring both returning and new members. The series, created by KAP Motion Pictures in collaboration with Golden Effects Pictures, boasts an extensive team of over 600 cast and crew members. The cast, comprising industry veterans like Kunle Remi, Bimbo Ademoye, and Sola Sobowale, alongside Lateef Adedimeji and Gabriel Afolayan. As the streaming date approaches, fans and critics alike eagerly await the continuation of the “Anikulapo” saga, anticipating another cinematic triumph that could potentially surpass the success of its predecessor on both the global stage and local accolades.
