WHAT IS HAPPENING WITH NOLLYWOOD?

The news of Esther Nwachukwu saying she has slept with over 3,000 men has elicited reactiona from Nigerians, particularly on social media platforms.

One of the emotions Nigerians displayed was outrage was outrage, at what they described as an unnecessary exhibition of promiscuity. However, this is faux outrage.

According to data from top pornography and sexual hook up sites, Nigerians are heavy consumers of the materials they publish and distribute on their sites. It is therefore a show of hypocrisy that they are condemning her. Nonetheless, I have some reservations about the declarations Nwachukwu made.

I have watched hundreds of Nollywood stars, I have read about even more, and I know for a fact that artistes like Patience Ozokwor who we fondly called Suzanna, Nkem Owoh that we knew as Ukwa, Pete Edochie, Ini Edo, Stella Damascus, Uche Jombo, Ngozi Ezeonu, Olu Jacobs amongst others were never on the news for negative news. However, all of these have changed because nowadays, when Nollywood stars who have dropped from the limelight, or are yet to be A-List want to trend, they quickly say some things that are idiotic, nonsensical or controversial. Others simply release their sex tapes.

What Nedu Wazobia and his colleagues at The Honest Brunch are doing may be paying them for now in regards to the revenue they earn on YouTube or on any other channels they may b monetized on, nevertheless, word on the street is that, their podcast is turning into a vague, pointlessly long, and painfully hurting to listen to podcast where people go to sabotage themselves or others.

There is usually one controversy or another whenever they publish an episode of their podcast. Of course, I cannot tell them how to run their business, but they cannot tell me and other Nigerians how to view their program either.

Apart from the cheap popularity that will come from her self sabotaging and immoral publicity stunt, I do not see what gains Esther Nwachukwu can derive from declaring she has slept with 3,000 men, majority of whom are married men.

Even in the United States or United Kingdom, there is a reason porn stars are not pushed into taking normal movie roles.

I am even unsure Nwachukwu is leveraging on any of the Guilds in Nigeria for artistes, even though these platforms guarantee that she will network with fellow actors, directors, producers and other industry practitioners. I doubt this, and my advice is that she gets into one of them, instead of damaging her social currency by declaring she has slept with every man in Uhunmwonde Local Government Area.
