BBC DOCUMENTARY: POLITICIANS AND CELEBRITIES REACTS DIFFERENTLY TO T.B JOSHUA’S SECRET

Controversies, opinions and chaos has followed the release of a 3 part documentary exposing the secret activities of a famous, late Nigerian cleric. The 3 episode documentary explored the life of the late popular pastor, Temitope Joshua known as T.B Joshua, the founder of SCOAN, detailing his life and  secrets while also exposing the rape, physical abuse, fabricated results, and even trauma inflicted by the late Nigeria pastor.

The 150 minutes that documentary was released on Monday, Is divided into 3 episodes titled, “Disciples: Cult of T.B Joshua” features a first hand experience of the witnesses who were also church workers and staff also known as the disciples.

The investigative process took over 2 years to complete, and so made sure to feature the accounts of victims and eye witnesses of rape, assault, physical and psychological abuse, fabricated Miracles, amongst others. It also gave a detailed exploration of the controversies surrounding The cleric, T.B Joshua, who died on the 5th of June 2021 in Lagos, at the age of 57.

Following this release, there’s been an influx of opinions, and points to agree or disagree with this documentary even by popular politicians and celebrities. Even Femi Fani Kayode (FFK) dropped his opinion about this Documentary.

T B Joshua was one of Nigeria’s Richest and highly influential religious personalities and was respected in Nigeria and beyond and was well known and respected because of his numerous  miracles. The prophet amassed so much wealth and was in 2011 titled one of Africa’s Richest pastors by Forbes. He was well known and recognised and so had affiliations with presidents, Celebrities, and powerful people.

He was quite a controversial minister during his lifetime, and funny enough, long after death, he kept this reputation alive. In 2018, a Disciple known as Bisola Johnson released a book – The T.B Joshua I know – Deception of the Age, Unmasked.  She further granted interviews in relation to this where accused him of Diabolism, slavery, and sexual abuse, shaking the credibility of the cleric and planting doubts in the mind of his followers. 

This was followed by another radio station scandal hosted by late journalist Kola Oluwuyi in his “Nkan Mbe” series where many of SCOAN backroom staff confessed the atrocities done by this reverted minister. This controversy led to a ban being placed on the church in Cameroon, describing him as Diabolical in 2012.

But the biggest scandal came to play on 12th September following the collapse of the church’s  guesthouse, situated within the church auditorium, it was reported that over 116 people, mostly foreigners, came to feel his miracles had died in the commotion. Though the church maintained that it was a planned explosion by Boko haram that caused the collapse, officials from the Lagos state building regulatory board stated otherwise and held that it fell due to structural failure which was confirmed in the documentary.

The Documentary

The BBC documentary was as expected brought about chaos within the prophet  believers and amongst Nigerians as they are a mix of reactions. BBC reports that over 30 persons provided a first hand experience of what it was like working with T.B Joshua. They recounted their harrowing experiences featuring Sexual Assaults, physical & Psychological abuse, trauma, Fabricated miracles and solitary confinements. 

The investigation and documentary creation took BBC 2 years of investigation featuring over 15 journalists from  3 continents. The experiences of these victims gave a stark opposite to the front presented by The prophet, who was otherwise seen as a great and philanthropic minister.

It further shed light on his plan to enslave westerners and use them to enhance his image, thereby increasing his fame and propagating the unstable image. Most of the disciples recounted that they came to see the power of God in display and instead met trauma, enslavement and miracle faking within the church.

The Church’s Reaction

BBC earlier stated that the church had earlier not answered to the allegations when they sent the Investigative reports, and as expected, the church has come out to strongly disagree. They had first released a clip of T.B Joshua stating that “Some of his disciples will betray him” shortly after the documentary was released.

The church later released a statement through the public Affairs Director of the church, Dare Adejumo, stating that the documentary “cannot rubbish the indelible footprints of the prophet.” He asked why his wife was not aware of the atrocities stated in the documentary.

He accused the BBC of deviating from Journalism and choosing to dish junk and fakery to the public. And capped it by saying “Hundreds of BBC charades cannot rubbish the indelible footprints of TB Joshua.”

The Public

Mixed reaction trailed the release of the documentary and while most Nigerians on X, could affirm to the fake & staged miracles, some strongly disagree and still defend the late prophet.

In response to this Documentary, notable politicians like the Former Aviation Minister, Femi Fani Kayode,  a supporter of TB Joshua said they can never destroy the prophet with dirty lies through his X account.

Other Nigerians and celebrities like Victor AD recounted their experience of the good work he has done and how much he healed them which as expected has trailed mixed reactions.

Some others also disagreed and others like Daniel Regha asked for more clarity and substantial proof as there was a glaring lack of it in the documentary. Some scars, a few more emotions and  more substantial evidence would have erased all forms of doubt.
