ANMD NATIONAL CONVENTION 2023: FOSTERING CREATIVITY AND EXCELLENCE

On the 22nd of October, the Victor Uwaifo creative hub in Benin City bore hosted in grandeur, the Association of Nigeria Movie Directors (ANMD) National Convention 2023. This event, graced by luminaries in the Nigerian film industry like NgoziEzeonu who is the Vice President of the occasion, marked a pivotal moment for the association and the broader Nollywood community.

The heart of the ANMD convention lay in the words and wisdom of its leadership. ANMD President Kenneth Ibeanusi, a respected figure in the industry, addressed the audience with fervor and conviction. His presidential speech resonated with passion, urging fellow movie directors to unlock their creativity and recognize the power of collaboration as an avenue for growth and investment. He painted a vision where Nollywood’s artistic excellence and commercial appeal would converge, creating a new era for Nigerian cinema.

Kenneth Ibeanusi’s call for collaboration mirrors the evolving landscape of the global film industry. In an era where technology and content creation are constantly shifting, the collective strength of professionals in the film sector becomes increasingly vital. He emphasized that creative minds in Nollywood must work together to harness the full potential of the industry. In the face of changing audience expectations, emerging distribution channels, and ever-evolving storytelling techniques, this unity is not just a choice but a necessity.

The convention took an enlightening turn as Dr. Albert Ehi Akhogba, a lecturer at Ambrose Alli University and a celebrated ambassador for the Nollywood industry via Statlinks Movie Africa, Worldwide, took the stage. His lecture, titled “Visual and Performing Arts: Cardinal Potentials Needed for an Accomplished Celebrity in Nigerian Movies,” provided deep insights into the roadmap for success in Nollywood.

Dr. Akhogba’s vision for Nollywood was nothing short of ambitious. He depicted the industry as one with the power to dominate the world, given the right approach. The “Cardinal Potentials” he laid out were not just a set of skills but a philosophy for aspiring actors and actresses to live by. His discourse highlighted the need for these celebrities to be stylistic and innovative, emphasizing that uniqueness is a prized asset. The idea of a consistent presence in movies underscored the importance of building a lasting career.

Perhaps one of the most intriguing points Dr. Akhogba made was the call for Nollywood stars to embrace politics. This suggests a wider role for celebrities in shaping society, a reminder of the influence actors and actresses can wield in advocating for change. His emphasis on being teachable and humble highlighted the importance of continuous learning and the ability to adapt in the ever-evolving world of entertainment.

Dr. Akhogba’s prescription for Nollywood celebrities to be extraordinary encapsulated the essence of striving for greatness. Extraordinary individuals stand out, and in an industry as competitive as Nollywood, it’s not just a choice but a prerequisite. The lecture resonated with aspiring actors and actresses in the audience, inspiring them to reach for greatness.

Beyond the intellectual discourse, the ANMD convention was a stage for honoring those who have contributed significantly to the film industry. One such honor was extended to Mr. Phillip Shuaibu, the deputy governor of Edo state. This recognition marked the essential role of state governments in supporting and nurturing the film industry.

Phillip Shuaibu’s recognition highlighted the critical link between government authorities and the thriving Nollywood. As the industry continues to grow and mature, the support of state and federal governments is crucial for fostering an environment where creativity can flourish.

As the convention reached its zenith, President Kenneth Ibeanusi embarked on the solemn task of inducting new members into the ANMD. This ritual represents a symbolic commitment to the organization’s mission, which remains at the core of the Nigerian film community.

The induction of new members is not merely a formality; it’s an affirmation of the continuous growth and evolution of ANMD. It’s a sign that the association is not resting on its laurels but actively expanding its ranks to include fresh perspectives and talents. The future of Nollywood hinges on the collective effort of its members, and the induction ceremony served as a compelling reminder of this mission.

The ANMD convention was not solely about intellectual engagement; it was a celebration of the rich cultural diversity of Nigeria. Attendees were treated to a mesmerizing display of traditional dance performed by a local Edo cultural group. This performance served as a reminder that Nollywood, while embracing global trends, remains deeply rooted in the unique and diverse cultural tapestry of Nigeria.

Nollywood has long been celebrated for its ability to portray Nigeria’s cultural richness on the silver screen. This cultural display at the convention was a testament to the industry’s commitment to preserving and celebrating Nigeria’s traditions, even in the midst of rapid modernization.

Summarily, the ANMD National Convention 2023 was a testament to the enduring vitality of Nollywood and its commitment to excellence and growth. The event showcased the unity and shared vision of movie directors, the wisdom of industry veterans, and the promise of emerging talent.

The convention reinforced the importance of creativity, collaboration, and continuous learning in the film industry. Dr. Akhogba’s lecture offered profound insights into what it takes to become a successful celebrity in Nigerian movies. The recognition of distinguished guests underscored the supportive role of government authorities. The induction of new members signaled the association’s ongoing commitment to its mission.

Ultimately, the ANMD convention was more than just a meeting; it was a celebration of Nollywood’s past, present, and future, and a reminder that the world of Nigerian cinema has limitless potential. As the industry continues to evolve and expand, conventions like this play a vital role in shaping the future of Nollywood. They inspire actors and actresses, provide a platform for collaboration, and celebrate the rich cultural tapestry of Nigeria, reminding all that Nollywood is not just an industry; it is a national treasure.
