Earlier today, Dr. Shaibu Husseini, @igalaman, the Executive Director/CEO of the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB), addressed participants at the @YouTube Africa Month event today, May 9th, 2024.
He revealed plans to fully digitalize the board’s operations, citing the global shift towards digitalization.
Dr. Husseini emphasized the importance of media literacy advocacy engagement, especially in Nigeria, where many viewers lack adequate understanding of content ratings.
He announced a comprehensive media literacy program scheduled for May 27th, aimed at educating young people nationwide.
The board will focus on sensitization and educating the stakeholders to drastically reduce the need for censorship.
ED/CEO expressed deep concerns about content creators bypassing NFVCB regulatory statutory powers of censorship and classification of all films and video works, instead submitting their films to digital platforms, which the Board strongly frowns at.
He assured the stakeholders of quick timeline between 24 to 48 hours of submission of a film and video work for the release
Accompanying the ED / CEO were some Management staff including Mrs. Olayemi Alonge-Oyadiran, Director of Planning, Research, and Statistics; Ms. Deborah Malgwi, Director of Film Censorship and Classification; and Mrs. Nasiru H. Dairu, Head of Legal Services. Also present were Mrs. Uju Emagha, South West Zonal Coordinator, and staff from the Lagos office.
